BJP has appointed Ravindra Chavan, a prominent Maratha leader and four-time MLA from Dombivali, as its new Maharashtra state president. His elevation comes at a time when the party aims to strengthen its organisational base and reduce dependency on allies before the 2029 Assembly elections.
Chavan (54) was made the working president last December, especially after being dropped from the state cabinet, signalling a larger organisational role for him. Outgoing BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule praised him, saying “He is a loyal and committed karyakarta who works wholeheartedly without questions, making him acceptable to all leaders and workers.”
Starting his political career as a corporator in Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation in 2000, Chavan later became its standing committee chairperson. He was elected as MLA in 2009 from Dombivali and has retained the seat since then. Between 2016 and 2019, he served as minister in the Devendra Fadnavis-led government, handling crucial portfolios such as Ports, Medical Education, IT, and Food & Civil Supplies.
BJP insiders believe Chavan’s appointment will send a strong message to the Maratha community, which has been demanding reservation under activist Manoj Jarange-Patil’s leadership in recent years.
